Portly Oat

An excursion into Dark Beer brewing.  I'm still 'learning' to enjoy darker beers, so I thought it would be fun to make one.  This is a standard recipe from Seven Bridges with one pound of oats tossed in for some silky mouth-feel.

Brew Date: 9/18/2010

IBU: 42
OG Target 1.056 - 1.060
FG Target 1.012 - 1.018
ABV: 5.5%

8lbs   Briess pale 2-row organic malt
1lb     Organic rolled oats
1lb     Briess Organic Munich malt
3/4lb   Briess Organic caramel 120 oL malt
3/4lb   Briess Organic chocolate malt
3/4 oz American Summit pellet hops-bittering (35 IBU)
1/2 oz New Zealand Hallertaur organic whole hops- flavor (8 IBU)
1/2oz New Zealand Hallertaur organic hops-aroma
1/2 teaspoon Organic Irish Moss

Yeast - White Labs #002 English Ale - with one step up 18 hours before brewing.

Directions and brewing notes;

Strike water; 4 Gal at 168.
Mash at 150-152 (no notes..so I think we hit it)

OG at 1.046.  A little low.

Pitched at 75d in 67 ambient into our chamber.

10/5: Gravity testing 1.014.  Smooth, rich, roasty...this is going to be great.
10/15: FG 1.014.  OK...the yeast did it's work and we bottled it up.
